The 6-foot-1, 183-pound prospect from Mill Creek High School (Hoschton, Ga.) has visited South Carolina at least four times, most recently for the Spurs Up recruiting event.
“I was talking to coach Muschamp and he feels like I’m a good corner, but he thinks I can be the best safety that comes through South Carolina,” Gipson said, after he visited during the spring. “He also made a statement that I’m probably the best player in the 2018 class.”
South Carolina landed Gipson over Indiana and Tennessee. Auburn, Colorado and Oregon State were among his other offers.
With Gipson now on board, the Gamecocks’ 2018 class has two defensive backs. Three-star safety R.J. Roderick (Summerville, S.C.) pulled the trigger in early June.
Other DBs to watch
Four-star cornerback Jaycee Horn (Alpharetta, Ga.) pushed back his July 15 announcement to a later date. South Carolina and Alabama were initially named as the finalists, but Tennessee is firmly in the mix.
Steven Gilmore, the brother of former Gamecocks cornerback Stephon Gilmore, plans to reveal a decision on Sept. 17, which is his birthday. Georgia, Louisville and North Carolina are the other finalists for the 3-star from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, S.C.
How much of a factor South Carolina is with 4-star safety Trey Dean remains to be seen. He was once slated to commit on July 31, but those plans were pushed back to a later, undisclosed date. Alabama, Georgia and Texas are among the other schools once believed to be in the lead for his services.
