Now that the South Carolina coaches have a time attached to the 2017 home opener, they can move forward in planning their next big recruiting weekend.
Kentucky helps South Carolina open Williams-Brice Stadium for business on Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
For recruiting purposes, playing against a league opponent at night in your first home game is more than ideal. And it certainly helps that a few of the nearby programs that South Carolina competes with for recruits are either on the road that weekend or hosting not-so-appealing opponents.
Tennessee heads to Florida for one of three intra-league SEC games in Week 3. It’s among the more intriguing matchups on the college football schedule for Sept. 16, so plenty of recruits will want to be in The Swamp for that one.
Clemson playing on the road against Louisville falls into that same category. The defending national champions versus the reigning Heisman Trophy winner will attract plenty of high-level prospects from around the Southeast, including the area around Nashville, Tenn., which has emerged as a recruiting hotbed.
The two games start at 3:30 p.m.
However, Florida State’s annual grudge match with Miami probably trumps them both. The Noles and Canes square off at 8 p.m. and 4-star linebacker Dax Hollifield (Shelby, N.C.) has already expressed interest in making that his official visit weekend.
Virginia Tech, one of the other programs contending for a commitment from Hollifield, travels to East Carolina on Sept. 16. Another, North Carolina, plays at Old Dominion.
Occasional recruiting opponent Duke has a somewhat intriguing home date set with Baylor. The game starts at 12:30, so travel-hungry prospects could make it a 2-for-1 that weekend and visit both Durham and Columbia.
Below are the not-so-appealing Week 3 matchups that South Carolina’s recruiting opponents have:
- North Carolina State vs. Furman – 12:20
- Auburn vs. Mercer – 4
- Georgia vs. Samford – 7:30
Yes, indeed, South Carolina’s Sept. 16 game against Kentucky has the makings for a solid recruiting weekend. It will be up to the current players to do their part and maximize the opportunity for a hot start in 2017 and beyond.
