What’s the latest with 4-star quarterback Ryan Hilinski? SEC Country just caught up with the top-rated member of the 2019 South Carolina recruiting class.
From his conversation with Steve Spurrier and recent run of offers to the news that the Gamecocks had offered another 2019 quarterback, there were a handful of topics to discuss with Hilinski, the No. 6-ranked pro-style quarterback in the country.
Here’s the latest from the 6-foot-4, 222-pound junior from Orange Lutheran (Calif.) High School.
How did that conversation with Coach Spurrier happen? Did y’all meet at the spring game in March?
Hilinski: “We did meet at the spring game. I met his wife, actually, Jeri. Their son is actually the wide receivers coach at Washington State, so we’re kind of in a small world together. But I actually talked to her before I talked to Mr. Spurrier. We were doing this piece for SportsIllustrated when I made the call and the producer that was helping us with the SportsIllustrated piece was like, ‘Hey, I’ve got coach Spurrier’s number if you want it.’ So he gave me the number and I sent coach a text. The next thing I know I’m getting a call from coach Spurrier. We just talked a little bit about what it takes to be a successful QB, in life a little bit. Just hearing those words of encouragement from him and being able to talk to him 1-on-1 was pretty special.”
When LSU offered at the end of last month, does it hit you that you’re probably going to start getting more offers or did you already have a pretty good idea others were on the way?
Hilinski: “I’ve had a pretty good offseason so far and I felt like, with all the work I’ve been putting in, I felt like a couple more would come. And these guys have already been in touch with me since before I committed to South Carolina. I felt like they were going to come. I didn’t expect when they would come, but I felt like they would come eventually. But with LSU, Ohio State and UCLA, those are pretty big offers. It just solidifies, I think, that all the work I’ve been putting in is paying out.”
Do you hear from any other schools that haven’t offered?
Hilinski: “I hear from a couple. I hear from one West Coast school, Stanford. I think they’re going to come out to practice this week. They’re going to come and see, evaluate a little bit. Other than that, there’s a couple of schools that still reach out that have offered me, but I haven’t really talked to anybody that hasn’t offered. Maybe a little bit of [Southern Cal] here and there, but that’s basically it.”
Have you planned to visit any of these other schools?
Hilinski: “I don’t think that I will. Maybe with a couple of recent offers that have been given out to South Carolina, maybe I’ll think about it, but I haven’t scheduled or talked about any visits coming up with any other schools.”
What did South Carolina’s coaches say after the latest 2019 quarterback offer?
Hilinski: “That’s the crazy part actually. I didn’t get anything from those coaches. I saw the offer over Twitter and I was kind of like, OK, you offered a couple of kids in my class and I didn’t hear that you were going to offer them. It’s kind of weird to me, just seeing that and not hearing from the coaches, because I know when I got offers from other schools, I called them before I posted them, so I thought it would maybe be a two-street. It’s just a little weird in my book, that’s all.”
Have you had a chance to talk with them, to hash that out?
Hilinski: “I haven’t yet. I haven’t talked to them. I got a text from Coach Muschamp this morning, just me and my parents, ‘It’s a great day to be a Gamecock,’ but I haven’t gotten anything from anybody.”
Do you know yet if you’ll be back at South Carolina for that official visit weekend in June?
Hilinski: “That’s the weekend of the Elite 11 finals, so I’ll be out here on the West Coast competing in that, so I won’t be able to make it, but I’ll be texting a couple of guys seeing what’s up.”
Any idea when you’ll get back?
Hilinski: “It’s still kind of not really knowing. I think I’m going to talk to these coaches about the recent situation first, then we can figure out when a good time to visit is. Maybe, if Chris [Steele] goes back, I’ll go back with him and do that kind of trip, but I haven’t really figured out a solidified date yet.”
