South Carolina recruiting Question of the Day: Can the Gamecocks land a top 20 class?

Welcome to Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017.

@DHannum8 asks … 247 ranked us the 21st-best class last year. Currently ranked 27th. What are the chances we crack the top 20 this year?

Let’s say South Carolina finishes with Channing Tindall, Dylan Wonnum and flip Dorian Gerald and Jaycee Horn from Tennessee — just for the sake of this question, not saying those guys are going to end up with the Gamecocks.

The 247Sports class calculator would give South Carolina’s class 234.42 points. If all four of those guys hopped on board right now, that would give the Gamecocks a top 11 class. But it’s also early November.

That figure would’ve been 18th in the 2017 cycle. In 2016, 21 teams finished with higher point totals. A year earlier, it would have been 19th.

My guess is that South Carolina, or anyone else for that matter, has to finish with a point total in the low-to-mid 230s in order to have a top 20 class in 2018.

It’s possible, but the Gamecocks appear to have ground to make up for Tindall. And there’s no guarantee that Gerald and Horn wind up at South Carolina — Vols coach Butch Jones hasn’t been fired yet. But I still think Sandidge and Wonnum end up in Columbia.
