Will Muschamp understands the importance of being versatile on defense.
While speaking on The Cube Show with Cole Cubelic, the South Carolina coach spoke on the importance of being “multiple” on defense with the current offensive trends in college football. He addressed the need to adapt to a variety of schemes.
Check out what Muschamp said to Cubelic below.
“That’s the hardest thing about being a defensive coach right now is that you’re going to face some teams that are primarily run teams, you’re going to face some spread teams that are primarily throw teams, then you’re going to face your traditional Arkansas attack of more of a two-back flavor. It changes week to week and you really have four days to get ready for a game and that’s what makes it hard. You’ve got to be multiple enough defensively to handle different things.”
No doubt, it’s tough being a defensive coach in college football today. So it’s clear teams that are versatile on that side of the ball will be rewarded for it.
South Carolina’s development on defense this year will be interesting to follow. There’s room to grow after the Gamecocks finished 6-7 last year with a Birmingham Bowl berth. Still, it’s possible that we’ll see the Gamecocks take a step forward this year.
