The South Carolina women’s basketball team will return to the Final Four.
The No. 1-seeded Gamecocks cleared their last hurdle on their way to Dallas, beating No. 3 Florida State, 71-64, on Monday night in Stockton, Calif., during Elite Eight action. South Carolina built a 40-29 halftime lead and held on late in the second half. The Gamecocks clinched their second Final Four berth after appearing in the event for the first time in 2015.
Junior guard Kaela Davis led South Carolina with 23 points. Junior forward A’ja Wilson and freshman guard Tyasha Harris followed with 16 points apiece.
The Gamecocks advance to play on Friday against No. 2 seed Stanford, which won the Lexington Region with a victory against Notre Dame on Sunday. The winner of that game will play the victor of the contest between No. 1 UConn and No. 2 Mississippi State in the national championship game on Sunday.
South Carolina’s women’s team joins the school’s men’s squad with a Final Four appearance. Coach Frank Martin’s team clinched the program’s first Final Four berth with a victory against Florida on Sunday.
