HOOVER, Ala. – He may have appeared at SEC Media Day on a Thursday, but South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel is more of a Friday kind of guy.
Samuel said that he got his nickname, Deebo, from the 1995 movie “Friday,” starring Ice Cube, Chris Tucker and Bernie Mac.
In the film, Deebo, played by Tiny Lister, is one of the criminals in the community where Ice Cube and Tucker’s characters live. He forces Tucker’s character to help him rob their wealthier neighbor.
Samuel said he got the nickname when he was young after picking up a bad habit.
“My dad gave me the nickname,” Samuel said with a smile. “He used to say I liked to take things. It stuck ever since.”
Even though the movie came out months before Samuel was even born, he confirmed that he is very familiar with the cult classic.
“I have literally seen the movie about 100 times.”
South Carolina fans will hope Samuel can steal more balls out of the air next season. With Pharoh Cooper gone to the NFL, Samuel is expected to be a featured piece. As a redshirt freshman, he posted 12 catches for 161 yards and a touchdown in just five games.
His breakout performance came against Clemson, when he posted 104 yards and a touchdown.
