The Head Ball Coach is as chipper as ever even while he turned 71 on Wednesday.
Former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier spent part of his birthday on The Paul Finebaum Show tackling a variety of topics. Naturally, Spurrier rankled some feathers and took a shot at Alabama during his lengthy appearance.
“They’ve won 16 national championships,” Spurrier said. “They claim 16, and one of them in there was a 9-2 record.”
Spurrier’s dated jab refers to the 1941 season, when the Crimson Tide were named the national champions by the Houlgate Poll after after beating Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl. It was the last title Alabama won before Bear Bryant’s dynasty. In Spurrier’s mind, it shouldn’t even count.
Even at 71 years young, the HBC hasn’t changed a bit.
