South Carolina will lock up its 2017 recruiting class on Feb. 1’s National Signing Day, but four high school recruits already are on campus getting ready for spring football. SEC Country gives you the rundown on the four early enrollees.
South Carolina went into its 2017 cycle needing to address the offensive line more than any other spot on the offense. It has done that pretty darn well, adding to its numbers that got started with the commitment of offensive tackle Summie Carlay.
Carlay, from Laurens, S.C., committed in March 2016. He was the first high school offensive lineman to make his pledge to the Gamecocks, picking the in-state school over North Carolina State.
Now, he’s on campus and preparing for what matters most to an offensive lineman: experience and reps. Carlay is the lone early enrollee on the offensive line for the Gamecocks, giving him the chance to work with coach Eric Wolford off the bat, as the new offensive line coach takes over from Shawn Elliott.

Carley is 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, so one of his first tasks will be to add bulk to his frame. His future likely lies on the interior of the offensive line, especially given the number of tackle prospects the Gamecocks are bringing in for this class.
The Gamecocks will get a better idea of just where Carlay might fit in the coming weeks as he gets his South Carolina career underway.

Carlay took part in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas this season, playing for the South Carolina side, which lost to North Carolina. By many accounts, Carlay had a good week of practices for the game. He also was named to the All-Region 2-5A team.
