South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier turned 70 this year. The “Head Ball Coach” is among the best college football coaches of all time, with a 227-86-2 record heading into the Week 3 of the 2015 season.
In addition, he may stand alone as the greatest quote machine in the sport. To honor the Head Ball Coach as his illustrious career winds down, SECCountry.com will present a “Throwback Thursday” quote every week during the football season in honor of his most memorable remarks, which – in addition to his coaching career – are also Hall of Fame material.
“Hopefully, our Georgia.”
The context of the quote:
Spurrier was asked, as the Redskins’ coach in 2002, if the Dallas Cowboys were the equivalent to Florida State. Spurrier had a way of beating Georgia as the Gators’ coach.
The reaction to the quote:
The Redskins lost 27-20 to the Cowboys following Spurrier’s remarks. Washington did, however, win the regular season finale over Dallas, 20-14.
The push back from the quote:
Georgia lost 20-13 to Florida. The Bulldogs went 13-1 that season. The Gators finished 8-5, Ron Zook’s first season at Florida. SPURRIER!
The end result of the quote:
Spurrier lasted two seasons in the NFL before running back to the SEC East to join the Gamecocks ahead of the 2005 football season. His NFL experience seems to have been a disaster both on and off the field.
