A top Georgia wide receiver prospect is headed to a border state. Three-star receiver Shawn Smith out of Brunswick High School (Brunswick, Ga.) has verbally committed to South Carolina, according to a report from 247Sports’ Ryan Bartow.
“Coach (Bryan) McClendon and me are real close,” Smith told Bartow. “He’s been recruiting me real hard since he was at Georgia. South Carolina is a better fit for me. It’s close to home but not too far away. They said I could play slot and own it. They said they are signing four wide receivers this year and they need me to play right away.”
The Gamecocks beat out Miami for Smith’s verbal commitment. He will take official visits to Miami, South Carolina, West Virginia and Mississippi State, according to the report.
Smith is the No. 46 prospect in Georgia in the Class of 2017. He is the seventh verbal commitment in South Carolina’s 2017 class and first wide receiver.
