COLUMBIA, S.C. – The two position groups that have Will Muschamp feeling the best heading into his first season as the coach at South Carolina led to the Gamecocks’ selections on the preseason coaches All-SEC team on Tuesday.
Senior kicker Elliott Fry and senior left tackle Mason Zandi were named to the second team and third team, respectively, by the conference’s coaches.
Muschamp spoke Wednesday on his weekly radio show about how well the USC offensive line has been performing through camp and has voiced many times his confidence in his specialists. With Fry, Muschamp said last Thursday at the fall sports kickoff that he feels good anywhere inside 52 yards and he called the senior “as good a kicker as there is.”
Fry needs just 42 points as a senior to take the school record for most career points with 331. He currently has 289, trailing only Collin Mackie’s 330. The Frisco, Texas, native was a second-team All-SEC pick in 2014 after a standout sophomore season.
The 6-foot-9, 315-pound Zandi started 10 games at right tackle as a junior before making the move to left tackle for his final year as a Gamecock.
Coaches were not allowed to vote their own players onto the preseason coaches teams.
