Three-star quarterback Jay Urich committed to South Carolina on Friday afternoon.
The No. 28 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2017 announced his decision just after 3:30 at Wren High School in Piedmont, S.C.
South Carolina began its push for Urich this spring after Jake Bentley reclassified to the 2016 class.
Offensive coordinator Kurt Roper lead the charge, stopping by Wren High School on April 20 during the early evaluation period. Roper reported back to coach Will Muschamp after watching Urich throw in person and an offer was on the table the next day.
Duke, Southern Miss, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina and Furman also offered Urich, who transferred to Wren after his sophomore season at Blue Ridge High School.
As a junior, Urich passed for 2,758 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,031 yards and nine scores.
Urich is the ninth commitment for South Carolina’s 2017 class, which now features five high school players from the state of South Carolina.
