When Shawn Elliott was introduced as South Carolina’s interim head coach on Tuesday, he made it clear he wanted his Gamecocks to fight hard and “come out swinging.”
That level of intensity carried over into his first practice, which featured the playing of loud music in an effort to energize the team.
Now, we’ve gotten a little bit more insight into just how intense Elliott is.
Video footage from The State showed Elliott bumping his players — who are in pads — one by one before the game.
“He gets you ready. Coach Elliott, as you’ve all seen, he’s fired up,” South Carolina offensive lineman Mike Matulis said in the clip. “When you can see that in the coach, that really gets your fired up to have your coach in there behind you ready, just as fired up as you are. It gets everyone else ready. It’s a fight. It’s a 60-minute fight, and it gets us ready for it.”
Of course, that video was when Elliott was the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator. Who knows what to expect this week from an emotional Elliott making his head-coaching debut?
Steve Spurrier: "Gosh, if Shawn can win three of these six games, I think that would be an excellent job."
