The Head Ball Coach has always been known as a gregarious one.
So much so that Steve Spurrier would call coaches up out of the blue, like he did when he gave Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney a ring after his Tigers and Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks had both suffered losses to open the 2014 season.
Then-Georgia running back Todd Gurley had just ran all over the Clemson defense for 198 yards in a 45-21 loss, while the Gamecocks had been routed 52-28 by Texas A&M.
Thankfully, for all of us two years later, Swinney wasn’t around to answer Spurrier’s call. And the voicemail lives on in infamy.
“We just got our ass kicked the whole game,” Spurrier said. “Y’all just got yours kicked one quarter, it looked like … That dang Gurley guy, I don’t know how we’re gonna tackle him either.”
