South Carolina finished third in the SEC last season, but when the preseason media poll came out Wednesday, the Gamecocks were picked to finish eighth.
Gamecocks coach Frank Martin said his team must be making progress at SEC basketball media days, joking that they were picked 57th in previous seasons.
“I think I’ve been in this league, this is Year 5, the first four years, we were picked in the bottom four every single year,” Martin said. “Obviously, we have made some progress there. But they’re all irrelevant.”
Senior guard Sindarius Thornwell discussed USC likely being a bottom-half of the SEC pick two weeks ago. He said they are “just people’s opinion.”
“The game still has to be played,” Thornwell said. “It doesn’t matter how the beginning goes. When March comes at the end of the season, where we finish and how we do.”
Earlier Wednesday, Martin talked about the changes in recruiting at South Carolina with increased success in 2015-16.
