COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina men’s basketball coach Frank Martin spoke with reporters after Friday night’s 85-76 win over Louisiana Tech at Colonial Life Arena.
Here’s what the Gamecocks coach had to say:
- Opening: “That was good for our team. We’ve been real bad in practice the last two days. It was good for us to have gone out today and play somebody, instead of just beating them by 25. It would not have prepared our team for reality. The young guys, it’s like I’ve been telling them the last three days. You’re a month into practice and you’re already tired. How the heck are you going to survive in January? That’s part of what makes it hard to succeed with freshmen. Our upperclassmen, they weren’t much better in practice the last three days. They mean well. They’ve tried. They’ve been real good in preseason, but they haven’t been good the last two days. That translated to a very disengaged play from the team-concepts, from the ideas that we’ve tried to put in, going into the game.
- On Sindarius Thornwell: “He was not zoned in like he’s been everyday this preseason. But he’s a real good player. He understands what it takes to win games … Sin’s a real good player. He plays to win. I know this, I go home every day and I know I’m real happy he’s on our team.”
- On Maik Kotsar: “I thought Maik played pretty good. I just couldn’t keep him on the court. He just kept foul, foul, foul. I thought he played pretty good at the beginning of the game … Maik is going to be a real good player for us. Maik wants to be a good player. Maik wants to be a good player.”
