Will Muschamp made his priorities well known upon his introductory press conference in Columbia, S.C. — he knows how to recruit.
One change the first-year South Carolina coach has made since taking over the Gamecocks is revamping the personnel in the recruiting office.
Muschamp has amped up that department for South Carolina, which according to GamecockCentral.com’s Chris Clark, had been lacking in comparison to other SEC programs under previous coach Steve Spurrier.
“There’s no question, we’ve got to move forward,” Muschamp said. “As a position coach, you wear a lot of hats. You have to coach your position, manage your room, and that takes a lot. On top of that, you have to manage your area in recruiting, you have to manage your position in recruiting, and to be able to have people that can manage and help facilitate information.”
Muschamp changed longtime South Carolina staffer Robbie Liles’ job title to director of player personnel. The coach also added three new staff members to the recruiting office, including Carina Hargreaves, the sister of Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III.
Muschamp indicated he is not yet done adding to the department. That process is expected to wrap up after the recruiting period.
The South Carolina coach’s emphasis on recruiting and improving the office dedicated to such tasks have paid off as well, as the Gamecocks have nabbed a number of highly-touted prospects such as Bryan Edwards, among others, since his arrival.
