COLUMBIA, S.C. — Will Muschamp’s night was wrapping up when he was floored late Saturday night by stats coming in from Texas Tech’s game against Oklahoma.
The South Carolina coach saw what is stunning in any mind, as Red Raiders quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw 88 times for an NCAA record-tying 734 yards.
“Yeah, I had a heart attack when I saw it in bed at night,” Muschamp said.
The defensive-minded Muschamp laughed heartily when asked if that is the type of football he knows and understands. He then went on to discuss the wide variety of offenses in college football today, as well as praising Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury and Mahomes.
“No. 1, that guy, he is, what a quarterback this guy is,” Muschamp said. “He can run it and throw it and looks to be a great competitor.”
Muschamp said the Gamecocks would like to have their offense moving with more tempo, a la Texas Tech, but there’s smaller tasks in front of it before they can get moving quickly.
“Absolutely, if you could tell me we are going to score 70 points,” he said of wanting to go fast on offense. “We want to create more tempo, but in order to create tempo, you’ve gotta get first downs.”
South Carolina ranks No. 122 in the nation in first downs per game.
