For most, National Signing Day is simply finalizing a verbal commitment with pen and paper.
Others use the annual holiday as a chance to announce their final decision in front of cameras with fans of multiple teams paying close attention.
And then there’s the class of early enrollees.
For most prospects who signed early with their college teams, signing day is merely a spectator event.
Not in Columbia, S.C.
First-year South Carolina coach Will Muschamp set up a private signing day event for the Gamecocks’ six early enrollees, according to WLTX’s Alyssa Lang.
Muschamp had cameras and TVs scattered across the South Carolina press room, helmets on a South Carolina-themed table and both members of the media and the families of the early enrollees in attendance.
Four-star dual-threat quarterback Brandon McIlwain, four-star wide receiver Bryan Edwards, three-star defensive end Keir Thomas, three-star defensive tackle Kobe Smith, three-star running back C.J. Freeman and three-star cornerback Chris Smith enrolled early at South Carolina this year.
It’s not a bad deal to get to partake in National Signing Day when you’re already living on campus.
