Steve Spurrier maintains a very strong presence, and that might be an understatement.
First-year South Carolina coach Will Muschamp, Spurrier’s successor, said he certainly understands that.
Muschamp and assistant head coach Lance Thompson not only gushed over their experiences with the Head Ball Coach to GreenvilleOnline.com’s Willie T. Smith III, but made it clear that they want both Spurrier and his wife, Jerri, to remain staples in the clubhouse.
“For them to be involved is important because I think you always, as a coach, need to embrace the tradition and the history of the program and they have a huge, prominent part in our program and always will,” Muschamp said. “I think it is important for them to be around.”
Spurrier paid Muschamp a visit just before Christmas, and in the past endorsed the former Florida head coach.
It’s a bit fitting too, as both Spurrier and Muschamp were previously at the helm of the Gators before taking over the Gamecocks.
Thompson said he sees a lot of parallels between the two coaches.
“It’s going to take a little bit, just like it did coach Spurrier,” Thompson said. “But coach Muschamp, with the vision he’s got and the staff will do that … It is just going to take time. We’re going to get to work every day and have a vision.”
