COLUMBIA, S.C. — Lena McIlwain must have thought South Carolina didn’t have a good plan at quarterback.
Earlier this week, Brandon McIlwain’s mother went to Facebook to vent her frustration about her son’s demotion from starting quarterback to backup.
Her comments went viral.
On Saturday, after the 34-28 win over Massachusetts, South Carolina coach Will Muschamp was asked about Lena McIlwain’s rant.
“I’ve talked to Brandon. We’re on the same page, moving forward,” Muschamp said. “Every decision we make in the program, it’s about winning and what’s best for our football program and that’s really what we’re doing.”
After playing in the first two games and starting the next three, McIlwain was supplanted as the starter against Georgia. Perry Orth played every snap.
Jake Bentley got the start and saw a majority of the snaps against UMass. In his South Carolina debut, Bentley completed 17 of 26 passes for 201 yards with 2 touchdowns.
McIlwain, who appeared only in goal line and short-yardage situations, rushed 5 times for 17 yards against the Minutemen.
If that wasn’t good enough for his mom, she knows how to get in touch with the Gamecocks head coach.
“I’m not saying we’re always right and I’m not saying everyone needs to agree with it, but every parent has my number and I am as accessible as any head coach in America,” Muschamp said. “If anybody wants to call me and talk to me about a situation, they’re welcome to call me.”
