Despite some early adversity, Will Muschamp has the Gamecocks well-positioned for a strong finish to the 2017 season.
The Gamecocks have started 5-2, despite losing some of their top playmakers, including Deebo Samuel and Rico Dowdle, to significant injuries. South Carolina is fresh off a 15-9 road win over Tennessee, making it the second year in a row that it has been able to beat the Volunteers.
South Carolina does have a tricky finish to the season, as it still has to play Georgia, Florida and Clemson. But South Carolina gets the last two at home, and the Gamecocks have already pulled off one big upset in taking down North Carolina State. To date, that is N.C. State’s only blemish on the season.
Fans seem to think highly of Muschamp, as he has fared well in the SEC Country approval ratings poll. In the poll’s previous installment, Muschamp came in at 90.2 percent. That ranked third among SEC coaches and was the best mark among SEC East coaches. It also was a new personal best for Muschamp.
As for the recruiting trail, Muschamp, who reportedly was paid $3 million in 2016, continues to show he can recruit with the best of them. South Carolina continues to trend up for blue-chip prospects such as Channing Tindall and Rick Sandidge. The Gamecocks have secured commitments from 4-star prospects Dakereon Joyner and Marlon Character Jr.
The Gamecocks continue their 2017 season on Saturday against Vanderbilt. Both the Gamecocks and Commodores will be coming off of a bye.
Vote on Will Muschamp’s approval rating
The SEC Country approval rating poll is designed to give an indication of fan happiness over a period of time.
Our formula is based on the percentage of respondents that select each answer. We multiply that percentage by the following factors: 1 (strongly approve), 0.67 (approve), 0.33 (disapprove) and 0.0 (strongly disapprove). In other words, if 50 percent of respondents select “strongly approve” and 50 percent select “approve,” the formula would be (50 x 1) + (50 x 0.67) = 83.5% approval rating.
