South Carolina coach Will Muschamp hopes to have WR Deebo Samuel back Saturday night for the Saturday night’s road trip to Kentucky.
Samuel, who’s dealt with hamstring injuries throughout his career, sustained another on the first play of the game at Mississippi State.
Muschamp told reporters after the 20-15 win that sitting Samuel against ECU was a game-time decision.
About 24 hours later during his weekly teleconference, Muschamp said he believes Samuel will be available in Lexington. That, of course, is assuming there are no setbacks during practice this week.
“It’s just one of those things. We have a machine that tests his strength levels,” Muschamp said. “His strength levels are up and if they’re at a certain level, then they’ll clear him to go.
“If they’re not at a certain level, then our medical staff will not clear him. That’s all based on the test and what they tell me.”
Through two games of the season, Samuel has 4 catches for 66 yards.
Unlike Samuel, freshman RB Rico Dowdle hasn’t played this season. Though Dowdle has been nursing a groin injury since the summer, Muschamp thinks the former 3-star recruit from Asheville, N.C. will be back in the mix in the near future.
“I’m hoping, in about a week, to get him back to practice,” Muschamp said. “We plan on playing him if he gets back.”
