SPARTANBURG, S.C. — At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, Will Register adds size to the pass catching corps in South Carolina’s 2017 signing class.
That suits 2017 quarterback commitment Jay Urich just fine.
“He’s a big target. He’s fast. He’s strong,” Urich said, after a recent 7-on-7 tournament at Spartanburg High School. “We’ve been pretty close ever since we played each other back in the fall, during the playoffs. He’s a good player overall. He’s a good guy, too.
“We’ve been forming a pretty good relationship off the field.”
When asked for a comparison, Urich likened Register to Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots.
“He’s just a big target, big guy and he has speed,” Urich said.
The rising senior from Chapin High School (S.C.) has a way to go before he reaches Gronk’s level, but he has the tools to potentially make an impact at South Carolina. According to the 247Sports composite, Register is ranked as the No. 14 tight end in the class of 2017.
Register is also the seventh-best prospect in the state of South Carolina, a few spots behind 4-star WR Shi Smith, who’s the top rated in-state prospect in the Gamecocks class.
“When I heard Shi committed, I was very excited,” Register said. “He’s a great player. We played him last year, third round of the playoffs. Union County, they knocked us out. Love to have him as a Gamecock.”
Not counting Javon Kinlaw, South Carolina’s 2017 class has 16 commitments. Almost half of the class came on board last month, during the Will Muschamp Football Camp.
“We add everyone to a group chat on the iPhone, so we text back and forth and meet up whenever someone comes to town, comes to campus,” Register said. “A lot of good guys. A lot of great players coming to us, some good DBs as well, so I’m looking forward to it.”
Perhaps the top target is 4-star ATH OrTre Smith, who’s ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect in the state of South Carolina.
“Still a few guys out there we’re trying to get. We’ll see if they give us a SpursUp soon,” Register said.
