KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee basketball hired a respected veteran coach in Rick Barnes, a likely future Hall of Famer.
The flip side, however, is that the 62-year-old Barnes and his staff have been questioned about their recruiting practices, most recently on WNML FM-99.1 show “Sports 180.”
Vols’ assistant coach Desmond Oliver explained that it’s not so surprising that Tennessee’s staff relies more on the assistants than the head coach.
“The good thing about being a veteran head coach,” Oliver said, “and I think every veteran head coach goes through this, they have earned the right to not have to go out like first- and second year head coaches do and oversell their program and beg kids to come.”
Tennessee likely just needs results to justify whatever basketball recruiting strategy the staff decides to apply, and that makes a contest like tonight’s 7 o’clock tipoff at East Tennessee all the more important.
The Bucs’ staff is lead by head coach Steve Forbes and assistant Jason Shay, two key cogs in the machine Bruce Pearl built when he was leading the Vols’ to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
SEC Country’s Mike Griffith and WNML’s Josh Ward discussed tonight’s game along with the Vols’ newest football recruit in today’s podcast.
