Bowling Green coach thinks Memphis may be the best team in Tennessee
Is Memphis the best team in the state of Tennessee? Bowling Green coach Dino Babers seems to think so.
Babers — who faced Tennessee in Week 1 and Memphis in Week 3 — said he’s “not sure Memphis isn’t the best team in their state,” according to John Wagner of The Toledo Blade.
Obviously, the comment could be interpreted as a jab at the Vols, who despite a 59-30 win had their hands full facing the Bowling Green offense.
In fairness to him, Babers did credit the Tigers as “a big-time football team” and possibly “the best team not in a Power 5.” Bowling Green lost to Memphis 44-41 this past weekend.
Either way, the comment should spark even more debate in the Volunteer State among fans of a now-defunct rivalry.
Tennessee and Memphis haven’t faced each other since 2010. The Vols are 22-1 all-time against their in-state foes, with the Tigers’ only victory taking place 1996.
