The Tennessee Volunteers might have their next great defensive stopper in 4-star defensive tackle Greg Emerson.
Emerson picked the Vols on Monday night over offers from programs like Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and many other top programs. He stands at 6-foot-3, 296 pounds.
The Jackson, Tenn., native is the No. 5 defensive tackle in the country according to 247Sports composite and is the No. 2 player in the state of Tennessee for 2018.
The commitment comes just one day after Emerson suffered a serious injury in a 1-on-1 drill at The Opening finals. He’s expected to be out at least 4-6 weeks with a fractured left fibula and a dislocated left ankle.
Emerson becomes the second best player in the Vols’ 2018 class, which was ranked No. 6 in the country before his pledge. He’s the highest-rated of four defensive tackles in Tennessee’s class, joining D’Andre Litaker, Brant Lawless and Jamarcus Chatman.
In addition to recruiting well nationally, Tennessee now has commitments from six of the top nine prospects in its own state for 2018.
