Clay Travis has weighed in on Tennessee’s situation with his top two picks to become the Volunteers’ next coach.
On Tuesday, the Outkick The Coverage analyst appeared on WJOX 94.5 FM and was asked about the vacancy left by Butch Jones’ firing on Sunday. During the interview, Travis mentioned Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen as “being the top targets” in his mind.
Here’s more from the interview:
“I think they’re legitimately trying to get Jon Gruden to be the next coach at the University of Tennessee,” Travis said on the radio appearance. “If it’s not Jon Gruden, I think it will be Dan Mullen. If I were putting money out, I would put money on both of those two guys as being the top targets.”
Of course, all this is speculation. Gruden has been a fascination among some Tennessee fans for a while. And Mullen has been tied to the Tennessee job recently.
We’ll see what happens in the coming days and weeks in Knoxville. Whoever receives the job will be tasked with making Tennessee a fast contender in the SEC East. (Much like Florida’s next coach will be charged with doing the same.) With Georgia rising in the division, the urgency should be clear.
