Five-star wide receiver Tee Higgins had been a verbal commit to Tennessee for five months before he reopened his recruitment. Since, he’s named Clemson, Tennessee, Florida State, Ohio State and Michigan as the teams he’s “talking a lot to,” according to Kipp Adams of 247Sports.
Even after decommitting, Higgins is still looking intently at the Vols, even if he says no school has an edge over the other.
“It’s in my backyard,” he said about Tennessee. “I always looked at that. And Coach (Butch) Jones is a pretty cool guy. It’s closer for my family to come watch me play, so that’s a good thing.”
The 6-foot-4, 188-pound Higgins was afraid of the fall out of his decision to reopen his recruitment, but Jones’ response eased Higgins’ anxiety.
“I was going to be a man about it, so I called the head coach, Coach Jones,” Higgins said, according to 247Sports. “He was just saying, ‘I respect your decision. We’re going to recruit you hard, like you were committed.’
“A lot of people told me, once you decommit from a school, the coaches get all mad at you. I didn’t want to believe it, but I also did believe it, so when he was calm about it, I was like, ‘Oh. OK, good.’”
Tennessee isn’t the only school that’s caught the eye of Higgins in a special way, as a mother’s influence is always worth noting, and Higgins’ mother likes Tennessee and Clemson.
“The two coaching staffs that really impressed my mom were actually Clemson and Tennessee,” he said. “She really likes those two schools. Her decision doesn’t affect what my decision is, but she really likes those two schools.”
Higgins is the No. 16 ranked player nationally and the No. 3 ranked receiver in the Class of 2017.
