Perhaps some Tennessee fans forgot about Daniel Bituli.
That’s understandable. The four-star linebacker from Nashville (Tenn.) Christian High School committed to the Vols in July, which in recruiting terms seems like decades ago. However, he shouldn’t be overlooked.
The 6-foot-3, 228-pound prospect was highly coveted by other schools, such as Florida and Auburn. Had he not committed so early, Bituli would have likely drawn even more interest considering he is the No. 15 linebacker in the nation and the No. 3 prospect in Tennessee.
Bituli could be a key signee for the Vols because he can play the linebacker/defensive end hybrid position that the Vols have utilized recently. Even if he’s simply a middle linebacker as has been discussed, Bituli could be an impact player considering he is one of the Vols highest-rated prospects.
Bituli’s decision also signifies Tennessee’s prominence in Nashville and surrounding areas. That will be a key territory for the Vols for the foreseeable future. Bituli’s primary recruiter for Tennessee was linebacker coach Tommy Thigpen. However, Bituli said he visited with several coaches during his recruitment.
When Bituli picked the Vols last summer, it was not a surprise. He had long said he was leaning towards Tennessee and a visit to see the Vols sealed the deal. However, just because he’s been a longtime commitment doesn’t mean he should be overlooked.
