The Tennessee coaching search finally ended late Wednesday night and became official early Thursday morning, when the Volunteers hired Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt to become their next head football coach.
Pruitt, also formerly the defensive coordinator at Florida State and Georgia, will remain with the Crimson Tide throughout their run in the College Football Playoff. Pruitt will have to balance preparing his defense for Clemson and a potential matchup with Georgia or Oklahoma while also assembling his staff in Knoxville and recruiting for the Vols.
Given that Pruitt is a defensive mind, ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit weighed in on what one of Pruitt’s most important hires will be as he gets rolling for Tennessee.
Great job reporting on all these coaching hires the last couple weeks Chris—especially following this one with all the twists and turns.
Jeremy is a great coach who knows the SEC very well and will bring Nicks’s blueprint with him. OC hire is a big hire. https://t.co/MVdcmJRweZ

Many Vols fans might immediately think of former quarterback and current Southern California offensive coordinator Tee Martin as an ideal candidate, but reports on Wednesday indicated that Martin is not expected to join Pruitt in Knoxville.
