A Tennessee offensive coaching candidate is making a return trip to Knoxville.
According to 247Sports’ John Brice, who cites multiple sources, Utah State running backs coach Mike Canales will return to Knoxville and have a second interview with the Vols’ staff within the next 24-48 hours.
Following former offensive coordinator Mike DeBord‘s departure for Indiana, Tennessee tight ends and special teams coach Larry Scott appears to be the favorite to land the vacant offensive coordinator position. However, the Vols also need for a quarterbacks coach after graduate assistant Nick Sheridan was hired away by Central Michigan.
Canales is one of multiple candidates that Tennessee has interviewed, according to 247Sports, including Ken Dorsey (Carolina Panthers QB coach), Jeff Durden (Richmond OC), Kevin O’Connell (San Francisco 49ers assistant) and Chris Weinke (former Los Angeles Rams coach).
Weinke is believed to have interest in a position with Tennessee, but is also hearing from some NFL teams, according to Brice.
Canales has also spent time with North Texas, South Florida, Arizona, the New York Jets and North Carolina State.
