KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee returned to Haslem Field on Tuesday, preparing for Saturday’s ballyhooed ‘Battle at Bristol’ against Virginia Tech.
The demeanor of Tuesday’s practice — the media only saw three short periods, mind you — was rather subdued. Butch Jones did his best to get the Volunteers amped during the stretch period, walking around and talking to individual position groups.
Quarterback Josh Dobbs was at practice, but (coincidence or not) the senior did not attempt any real throws during the viewing periods. He stretched, took snaps and lobbed a few warmup tosses, but the Volunteers did not practice any routes on air while reporters were present. Tennessee mostly worked on individual drills and lots of special-teams coverage stuff.
As the media was walking off the field, standout cornerback Cam Sutton notched a nifty interception during scout team work.
Meanwhile, star tailback Jalen Hurd remained in a green, non-contact jersey. Senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin was in a normal jersey for the first time all fall. Freshman tailback Carlin Fils-aime (broken hand) was also in a regular jersey. Sophomore defensive linemen Shy Tuttle and Kyle Phillips both practiced in normal jerseys Tuesday.
Notables in green jerseys included wideouts Preston Williams (shoulder), Jauan Jennings (knee) and Josh Smith (unknown) — three of the five receivers that saw regular snaps against App State. Sophomore defensive end Austin Smith, who did not play against App State, remained in a green jersey.
Tight end Jason Croom (hip) was back at practice, while starting center Coleman Thomas still looked limited by a heavily-taped ankle.
One veteran Volunteer was not present at practice but the media is not allowed to report who, per team policy.
