John Currie’s time as the athletic director at Tennessee ended with a disastrous coaching search, one that featured being reportedly denied by multiple candidates and a public revolt over a potential hire.
Now, Currie may be in position to take over another program.
According to Don Markus of The Baltimore Sun, Currie is one of three finalists interviewing for the open athletic director position at Maryland. Temple AD Patrick Kraft and acting Maryland AD Damon Evans are the other two finalists.
Currie was hired as Tennessee athletic director on Feb. 28, 2017, after previously serving as the athletic director at Kansas State since 2009.
After the Vols fired Butch Jones during the 2017 football season, Currie led a coaching search this past offseason to replace Jones. However, he never made a hire, as rumors circulated around several candidates — Greg Schiano, Jeff Brohm and Mike Leach — and Tennessee fans revolted on Twitter when the school seemed to be in position to hire Schiano.
Currie was fired, Phillip Fulmer took over as Tennessee AD and Jeremy Pruitt was then hired to be the Vols’ coach.
If Currie lands the Maryland job, he’ll be looking to rebound from a tough ending to his short stint at Tennessee.
