Phillip Fulmer may be zeroing in on the next coach at Tennessee. And a decision could come fairly soon.
According to a report from Scott Roussel of Football Scoop, Fulmer has either spoken to or has plans to meet with five candidates for the vacant Tennessee job.
Those names, in no particular order:
- SMU coach Chad Morris
- Former LSU coach Les Miles
- Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele
- Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker
- Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables
Some of those names may look familiar, as SEC Country’s Mike Griffith has gone over several of them as potential candidates and Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman highlighted Venables and Morris on Monday.
Fulmer has been a busy man after replacing John Currie as Tennessee athletic director on Friday.
Currie may have spoken with several of these candidates prior to his removal from the search, which would be in line with what Fulmer said about revisiting candidates during his introductory press conference.
The Football Scoop report also revealed that Fulmer may be telling potential coaches that he plans to be heavily involved in the football program as the athletics director at Tennessee.
One source told FootballScoop Fulmer has discussed being very present in the program with a number of candidates; and we also hear he has relayed a similar message to several Tennessee recruits.
Some coaches may find that attractive. Others may not.
Perhaps as interesting as the names of coaches Fulmer has talked with is the timeline Roussel reports for a potential decision. His sources say that Fulmer would like to have a decision made by the end of the day on Tuesday, which could mean things are about to move quickly.
Stay tuned, Tennessee fans. The Vols coaching search could be hitting the homestretch after what has been a stressful three weeks on Rocky Top.
