Did John Currie meet with Jon Gruden or not? It’s the question Tennessee fans have wanted answered for the better part of a week since Butch Jones was fired from his post in Knoxville.
According to a report from SBNation, the meeting did, in fact, happen between the Vols athletic director and the Monday Night Football analyst.
But if the report is to be believed, it was more about satisfying “factions of Tennessee fans and boosters” than it was about actually making a move to hire the Super Bowl-winning coach.
Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden has met with athletic director John Currie about the vacancy. This was a procedural move, and it helped Currie with factions of Tennessee fans and boosters who have long been obsessed with Gruden.
Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen and Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano are candidates.
Mullen and Schiano have been mentioned as potential coaches to look at, but this report seems to indicate they are actual candidates for the position. Mullen, who is a former Florida offensive coordinator, has been at Mississippi State since the 2009 season and makes nearly $5 million per season in Starkville. So a move to add him likely would be expensive.
