KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Without a cadre of key contributors, Tennessee was humiliated by top-ranked Alabama on Saturday in the Neyland Stadium.
The final score was 49-10 … but it easily could’ve been worse.
The Crimson Tide rolled to an early 14-0 lead, scoring their 10th non-offensive touchdown of the season on a long pick-6 in the first quarter. Tennessee was gifted a short field on a fumble, but Alvin Kamara’s 7-yard touchdown was the only time the Vols weren’t chasing the Tide into the end zone. The Vols allowed an astounding 438 rushing yards and were just 3-of-16 on third down.
“We have to move on,” UT coach Butch Jones said.
“I think the bye week is coming at the appropriate time. We have a lot of goals to get better as a football team. Everyone has to be responsible for their own self-determination and accountability to get better during this bye week. A lot of this (week) will be spent in the training room and getting healthy.”
How healthy can Tennessee get is the major question.
Already without stars Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Darrin Kirkland, Cam Sutton and others, the Volunteers lost a handful of starters again Saturday, and Jones admitted he’s “concerned” the injuries still could be an issue when Tennessee returns to action on Oct. 29.
“We have to get our health back,” Jones said.
“There has to be a sense of urgency for our youngsters to get better and help us on the final stretch after the bye week.”
Will the blowout loss, Tennessee dropped to No. 4 in this week’s SEC Country Power Poll.
The weekly poll includes 20 voters from SEC Country and around the country.
The Vols have an idle date before traveling to South Carolina on Oct. 29.
