Many high school players across the country made their way back to the gridiron Friday night. Tennessee commit Michael Penix was among those, and he put on a show.
The Tampa Bay Tech (Fla.) quarterback threw 5 first-half touchdown passes, then sat the entire second half as his Titans beat Brandon 51-0 in a preseason matchup.
Penix went 11-for-15 passing for 151 yards. Listed as a pro-style quarterback by recruiting services, he even scrambled for two first downs.
Penix seemed to remain humble after the performance, crediting his teammates.
“It’s fun having all these weapons,” Penix said to Rodney Page of the Tampa Bay Times.
Page went on to write, “Penix will clearly be the player to stop,” for Tampa Bay Tech’s first game of the season next Friday against Armwood.
It’ll be interesting to see how Penix performs once the competition improves throughout the season.
Penix rates as a 3-star quarterback, and fans have looked at Tennessee’s other QB commit, Adrian Martinez, as the better of the two prospects.
Martinez rates as a 4-star quarterback and ranked as the No. 7 dual-threat in the Class of 2018, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
A right shoulder injury has sidelined Martinez for the time being, though, and Penix continues to impress.
Penix said the two have become friends talking through the group text that Tennessee commits have together.
The future of Tennessee’s quarterback situation looks bright, regardless of who ends up becoming the starter.
