Tennessee’s comeback and bid for a sweep at Florida on Sunday fell short when the Vols dropped a 5-4 decision in Gainesville.
Tennessee (17-12, 3-9 SEC) won on Friday and Saturday at No. 7-ranked Florida (21-11, 6-6), winning a baseball series with the Gators for the first time since 2008.
Catcher Benito Santiago, who had the game-winning hit Saturday night, had a 2-for-5 performance at the plate on Sunday. Pete Derkay was 2-for-3 hitting with an RBI.
The Gators jumped out to a 5-0 lead, touching Vols starter Zach Linginfelter for two of those runs before Will Neely came on in relief in the third and allowed three more to cross the plate.
Tennessee rallied with three runs in the sixth inning, Will Heflin and Luc Lipcius each delivering RBI singles and Derkay getting struck by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Dom Thornton had an RBI single for the Vols in the eighth inning, but the rally stopped there and Florida escaped with the home win.
Jordan Rodgers drew a first-inning walk and extended his streak of reaching base safely to all 28 games he has started this season.
Tennessee next plays at East Tennessee on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
