KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee escaped Neyland Stadium with its dreams intact Thursday night, rallying for a 20-13 overtime victory over Sun Belt Conference member Appalachian State.
The No. 9-ranked Vols (1-0) beat the Mountaineers (0-1) in spite of themselves, managing to recover three of their own four fumbles. Most notably, tailback Jalen Hurd recovered Josh Dobbs’ fumble in the end zone of overtime to provide UT with the winning points.
Safety Micah Abernathy sealed the win by knocking down an Appalachian State fourt-down pass in the end zone, enabling the 100,074 on hand to exhale.
