BUFORD, Ga. — Tennessee already has a plan in place for Trey Sermon: Think Alvin Kamara.
The Vols have told Sermon, a four-star tailback from Sprayberry High School (Marietta, Ga.), they plan on patterning his game after Kamara. That means Sermon would be utilized on mostly outside runs and be used as a receiver out of the backfield. Kamara’s 34 receptions last season was second most for the Vols.
“I’m pretty versatile so he would use me out at receiver as well as running back,” Sermon said, referring to what he has been told by Tennessee running backs coach Robert Gillespie. “That’s pretty much how they would use me because that’s what I’m used to.”
When asked what makes him a good fit to replace Kamara, Sermon said, “Just my hands with me catching, my speed and my acceleration.”
Sermon is one of many backs to receive a scholarship offer from the Vols. Tennessee is in desperate need of a top tailback, especially if juniors Jalen Hurd and Kamara opt for the NFL Draft after this season. Both seem to have the ability, and Kamara strongly considered the move after last season, when he was a redshirt sophomore.
“It’s definitely something to think about because I plan on playing as a true freshman,” Sermon said during The Nike’s Opening Regional in Buford, Ga., on Sunday.
Gillespie is pushing hard for someone to replace the duo. Sermon, the No. 126 prospect in the country and the No. 9 running back, would fit the bill.
“He’s telling me that I’m really a priority for him and that he really wants me to be a part of their program,” the 6-1, 206-pound prospect said.
Sermon said campus atmosphere will be important in his decision and that he’s fond of what he’s seen at Tennessee. He’ll have other campuses to evaluate soon. He’s set to visit Oklahoma on April 2, then Alabama and a return trip to Tennessee. Sermon said he hears from UT, OU, Oregon, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Ohio State “a lot”. For now, there is no set list of finalists.
“I’ll release a top six very soon though,” Sermon said.
The Vols will wait, albeit probably not too patiently.
