Tennessee is looking to recapture its glory from the 1990s. Join us daily at SEC Country for the latest Tennessee recruiting news and notes on the next crop of Volunteers. In this edition, we discuss Tennessee’s board after the Trey Dean commitment.
Tennessee football’s 20th commitment from the Class of 2018 came as a bit of a surprise Wednesday night.
Safety Trey Dean announced his decision via Twitter to commit to the Vols.
How Trey Dean’s commitment changes Tennessee recruiting
Dean’s commitment will almost certainly end any pursuit of another safety in this cycle. Tennessee holds a commitment from another safety in Chattanooga native Brendon Harris.
I think the Vols will continue to go after another defensive back, though.
The No. 1 target has been and will continue to be cornerback back Jaycee Horn.
Horn rates as 4-star prospect and ranks as the No. 21 corner in the country and the No. 211 overall Class of 2018 prospect, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
There has been plenty written about Horn’s commitment process throughout the course of the summer. Horn originally had a set commitment date of July 15, when he’d chose between South Carolina and Alabama.
The date came and went without a decision, however, which signals a positive sign Tennessee had vaulted back into the mix.
The longer Horn waits to make his decision, the better Tennessee’s chances become.
Horn visited Tennessee’s campus July 22, a day after taking a visit to Alabama. Horn has yet to take a visit to South Carolina since his missed commitment date.
Cornerbacks Tanner Ingle and Brandon Cross have already committed to the Vols.
Any other corners on Tennessee’s radar?
If the Vols miss out on Horn, Stanley Garner will likely be the look for the Vols.
Garner, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native, plans to make his decision on Aug. 16.
Kentucky is probably the favorite at the moment, but expect Tennessee to make a strong, late push if it seems Horn is leaning toward Alabama.
