KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee football coach Butch Jones held a press conference Friday that signaled the unofficial start of the 2017 season.
SEC Country Vols beat writers Mike Griffith and Blake Morgan were in attendance and discussed what to look for as fall practice begins Saturday.
Jones emphasized the importance of building depth through competition.
“Really looking forward to taking the offseason to the practice field,” Jones said. “With the gains we made in the weight room, this should be the most competitive camp that we’ve had. The greatest motivator is that of playing time.
“It’s not just the quarterback battle that’ll be extremely competitive. I think it’s nine position groups across the board that should be extremely competitive.”
Junior Quinten Dormady and redshirt sophomore Jarrett Guarantano have competed for the starting quarterback job all summer. The competition will continue with no evident end coming in the near future.
