TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The storied “Third Saturday in October” rivalry wasn’t close on the scoreboard, but both teams brought a physical style that led to several play stoppages for injured players.
Tennessee’s injury report including senior offensive lineman Jashon Robertson limping off the field in the second half with an undisclosed injury during the 45-7 defeat at the hands of No. 1-ranked Alabama.
Robertson started the game at offensive guard, as the Vols put their fifth different offensive line combination on the field this season in an effort to match up best against the Tide’s talented front.
Tennessee junior offensive guard Jack Jones, who started the first three games, didn’t travel to Tuscaloosa. A source close to the team said Jones could be done for the season with a shoulder injury.
The Vols got a scare when freshman All-American candidate Trey Smith left the game for a series with what appeared to be an ankle injury. Smith, however, returned to the game and is not expected to miss next Saturday’s game at Kentucky.
The offensive line attrition puts redshirt freshman Ryan Johnson under pressure to perform.
Coach Butch Jones said he was not sure the extent of Robertson’s injury, but even with him healthy Johnson would join sophomore Marcus Tatum in the 7-man offensive line rotation.
Tennessee’s secondary depth was tested on Saturday, too, as freshman Shawn Shamburger got his first career start and significant playing time when senior Justin Martin was unable to overcome the ankle injury he suffered in the 15-9 loss to South Carolina.
Shamburger responded well, leading the team with 12 tackles and recording a sack.
Vols’ freshman safety Theo Jackson also saw his first extended action when Micah Abernathy left the game for a series before coming back in.
