KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee announced Wednesday that running back John Kelly and linebacker Will Ignont have been suspended for the game at Kentucky on Saturday.
The pair were pulled over Tuesday night and marijuana was found in the car.
The school released the following statement from Vols coach Butch Jones.
“John Kelly and Will Ignont will be suspended for the Kentucky game as a result of the incident on Tuesday night. Members of our football team have a responsibility to represent the University of Tennessee in a first-class manner. I met with John and Will and they understand their actions were unacceptable.”
Kelly was driving the car with Ignont in the passenger seat when the car was pulled over on Cumberland Avenue due to a headlight being out, according to a police report.
Neither player claimed ownership of the bag and pipe found by police. They were cited and allowed to leave.
Both Kelly and Ignont must turn themselves in for booking at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office by Nov. 7.
Kelly has 615 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns this season. He’s caught 26 passes for 255 yards. The junior is seen as one of the most important players on the Tennessee offense.
Ignont has played mostly on special teams.
The Vols have gone 14 consecutive quarters without an offensive touchdown. Breaking that streak will be more difficult with Kelly not making the trip to Lexington.
