KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee football coaching search enters Day 22 with no clear leader, although the shuffle is such that a few candidates have emerged.
New athletic director Phillip Fulmer, hired on Dec. 1 to replace suspended John Currie, has been mum on the job front, fueling more restlessness and speculation on Rocky Top.
Former Tennessee QB Tee Martin (39 years old), former LSU coach Les Miles (64) and Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele (59) are the names most circulated.
Many of the Vols’ fans have become just as intrigued by the gummed up process that has led to the lengthy search and athletic director change, with booster Jimmy Haslam and Tennessee icon Peyton Manning drawing more displeasure than any could have envisioned.
Haslam and Manning were at the front of the search with Currie when controversial Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano was nearly hired for the job on Nov. 26, in-part, leading to Currie’s ouster.
WNML’s Josh Ward discusses the coaching search in today’s podcast.
