Tennessee hasn’t aggressively pursued Class of 2019 quarterbacks, but that could change in June when the Vols begin hosting camps.
The coaching staff wants to get a better look at players to reshuffle the board, then fill the position. One quarterback the staff is intrigued by is New Orleans native Lance LeGendre, the top 2019 QB in the Louisiana. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound LeGendre is a dual-threat talent with a strong arm.
One roadblock for the Vols is LeGendre’s commitment to Kansas. His former coach at Warren East High School, Tony Hull, is the area recruiter for the Jayhawks. The connection was good enough for LeGendre to commit about three months ago.
SEC Country’s Sam Spiegelman caught up with some of LeGendre’s teammates and asked how solid is that commitment?
Sedrick Van Pratt: “I think Lance might be open, but it all depends on who treats him well and makes him feel like he’s at home.”
Ashaad Clayton: “I think he’s going to stick with Kansas because it’s his style, you know? He might open up to some other schools, but in my opinion, for now I think he’ll stick with Kansas.”
Chester Kimbrough: “It’s pretty wide open. We talk about it a lot, but I’ll leave that to him. He’s a man of his own word, so I got to leave that to him. He committed a little bit too early, but if that’s how he feels then that’s how he feels.”
When SEC Country spoke with LeGendre a month ago, he held firm in his commitment to Kansas but isn’t shutting down interest from other schools.
“Right now, I’m 100 percent committed,” LeGendre told SEC Country. “I don’t see myself de-committing right now. I still have to go through the proper protocol with all schools, then I’ll make my decision from that point.
“Every team has a fair shot, but I am committed right now. Every team has a fair shot if that makes sense.”
LeGendre also said he could “see himself playing” for Tennessee.
The Vols will be pushing for him to camp, though he’s made no plans for anything yet. He’ll likely camp to LSU and possibly Alabama this summer.
As the quarterback board shuffles this June, LeGendre has the talent to rise even higher on Power 5 recruiting boards.
