Tennessee is looking to recapture its glory from the 1990s. Join us daily at SEC Country for the latest Tennessee recruiting news and notes on the next crop of Volunteers. In this edition, we discuss Vols LB target Richard Jibunor’s interview with SEC Country’s Benjamin Wolk.
Tennessee has separated itself along with another SEC school for a top Class of 2018 defensive target.
The two schools have received more visits from Jibunor than any other. The feeling from both campuses gives Jibunor a good vibe.
“Every time I go to Auburn I’m like, ‘Man this is my home.’ It’s the same way with Tennessee, those two places,” Jibunor said.
Jibunor’s primary recruiter with the Vols is linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen. Auburn linebackers coach Travis Williams and Thigpen have formed the best relationships with Jibunor.
Jibunor says they have “basically the exact same personality.”
Tennessee offered Jibunor his first scholarship, which has helped the Vols stand out. But Auburn has hosted him more.
Florida and Georgia Tech have chased Tennessee and Auburn the closest for the Athens, Ga., native. The Gators maybe have the most realistic shot to reel in Jibunor.
The 6-foot-3, 206-pound linebacker had planned to make his decision before the end of August, but he might wait until September.
Jibunor wants to make one last visit to Gainesville, Fla.
“Florida’s coming hard now. I have to take that visit before I decide. As long as they give us permission to start visiting colleges, the week they let us go see them, I’ll be at Florida that weekend,” Jibunor said. “I want to be in that meeting room and to see how many linebackers they’ve got, who is graduating and who they’ve got coming in. I want to go to see how it feels and see what kind of feeling I get when I go to Florida.”
The final decision
The longer Jibunor waits, the better Tennessee’s situation looks. From the sound of Jibunor, Auburn seems like his likely decision.
Maybe Florida can make Jibunor doubt his decision a little more, which keeps the door open for the Vols.
Tennessee could use one more outside linebacker for this cycle — the Vols have already taken Matthew Flint — and Jibunor would fit right in.
