Latest Tennessee football news
Tennessee senior kicker Aaron Medley will be out an extended amount of time with an undisclosed illness and redshirt sophomore defensive end Darrell Taylor remains suspended indefinitely.
Coach Butch Jones updated the Vols’ health status at his Monday press conference, saying that tight end Jakob Johnson is back in action this week and kick returner Evan Berry also will be getting repetitions.
The Vols (3-3, 0-3 SEC) need all the help they can get with a trip to No. 1-ranked Alabama (7-0, 4-0) on deck at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama is a 34-point favorite over the Vols and Jones explained why.
“In terms of Alabama, probably the most complete football team I’ve seen in a number of years, and all you have to do is look at their body of work, “Jones said. “ They lead the SEC in total offense and total defense and they lead the SEC in scoring offense and scoring defense. They are No. 1 in the country in rush defense and they have a plus-11 turnover margin. They do a great job of taking the ball away. They have 10 interceptions.”
Tennessee is coming off a turnover-free 15-9 loss to South Carolina that saw redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano make the first start of his career.
Guarantano impressed teammates, but the Vols offense continued its red-zone struggles, its streak without a touchdown now reaching 10 quarters.
Jones learned last Friday that Medley was too ill to play and turned to true freshman Brent Cimaglia to handle the kicking duties.
Cimaglia responded by making all three of his field goal attempts (29, 33 and 24 yards) against the Gamecocks.
Jones indicated on Monday he’ll stick with Guarantano as the starting quarterback.
The Vols’ offensive line, however, could be in for a shake up. Tennessee has started the same combination the past two games, but the Vols might change things up against an Alabama team that’s known for an aggressive pass rush.
That could mean fifth-year senior Brett Kendrick moving back outside to offensive tackle, and senior Coleman Thomas or junior Jack Jones getting back into the starting lineup at offensive guard.
Jones said that while Berry is back practicing, he remains questionable for Saturday’s game at Alabama.
